Thì quá khứ tiếp diễn (Past continuous) là kiến thức cơ bản xuất hiện thường xuyên trong các bài tập ngữ pháp và trong giao tiếp hàng ngày. Mặc dù xét về lý thuyết, việc học thì này khá dễ dàng, song thực tế khi vận dụng vào bài tập không phải ai cũng giành điểm 10 trọn vẹn. A. Tóm tắt kiến thức về thì quá khứ tiếp diễn

1. Định nghĩa  về thì quá khứ tiếp diễn

Thì quá khứ tiếp diễn là một trong 12 Thì trong tiếng Anh (tất cả các thì trong tiếng anh), được dùng khi bạn muốn diễn tả về một sự việc đang xảy ra tại một mốc thời gian xác định trong quá khứ.

*Ví dụ:

• Yesterday at 8 p.m, I was playing basketball with my dad and my brother. (Lúc 8 giờ tối qua tôi đang chơi bóng rổ với bố và anh trai tôi)

Ngoài ra, thì quá khứ tiếp diễn còn được dùng trong các trường hợp sau:

• Mô tả hành động đang xảy ra trong quá khứ thì bất ngờ có một hành động khác xen ngang 
• Diễn tả hành động xảy ra cùng lúc trong quá khứ
• Nói về hành động trong quá khứ có tính chất lặp lại và gây ảnh hưởng không tốt đến người khác
• Nhấn mạnh tính liên tục của một hành động trong suốt một thời gian dài trong quá khứ

2. Cấu trúc của thì quá khứ tiếp diễn

a) Câu khẳng định

 

S + was/ were + V_ing….

Chú ý:   

I, She, He, It, Danh từ số ít	was
You, We, They, Danh từ số nhiều	were

 

*Ví dụ:

• My best friend was swimming when I came to her house.
• They were cooking a barbecue while I was preparing drinks.
• I was thinking about my boyfriend last night.

b) Câu phủ định

S + was/ were + not + V_ing…

Chú ý: was not = wasn’t

           were not = weren’t

*Ví dụ:

• She wasn’t taking an English test.
• They weren’t fixing their computer.
• Thinh was not talking about it before I arrived.

c) Câu hỏi nghi vấn

→ Không có từ để hỏi: 

                        Was/ Were + S + V_ing…?

                           Yes, S + be. / No, S + be not

*Ví dụ:

• Was Tom racing with Tonny at 6.pm yesterday? No, he wasn’t.
• Were we going to the beach at that time? Yes, we were.
• Were you thinking about that story yesterday?

→ Có từ để hỏi:          

      Wh-words + am/ is/ are + V_ing…?

*Ví dụ:

What were your cousins doing at night yesterday? → They were sleeping like a log.

3. Cách dùng thì quá khứ tiếp diễn

Cách dùng	Ví dụ
Diễn tả một hành động nào đó đã và đang xảy ra tại một thời điểm cụ thể trong quá khứ.	Jun Pham was watching TV at 10 pm last night. (Vào 10 giờ tối qua, Jun Phạm đang xem ti vi.)
Diễn tả những hành động xảy ra đồng thời cùng một thời điểm trong quá khứ	Hoang was listening to music while his father was washing his car in the yard. (Hoàng đang nghe nhạc khi bố anh ấy rửa xe ô tô ngoài sân.)
Diễn tả một hành động đang xảy ra thì có một hành động khác xen vào, hành động đang diễn ra sẽ chia ở thì quá khứ tiếp diễn	I were waiting for the bus when Ha came. (Tôi đang chờ xe buýt khi Hà đến.)
Diễn tả một hành động lặp đi lặp lại nhiều lần trong quá khứ và nó làm phiền đến người khác	My neighbor was always playing music all day. (Hàng xóm của tôi luôn luôn mở nhạc cả ngày.

 

4. dấu hiệu nhận biết thì quá khứ tiếp diễn

Trong câu ở thì Quá khứ tiếp diễn sẽ xuất hiện các trạng từ chỉ thời gian trong quá khứ kèm theo với thời gian cụ thể, như:

Từ	Nghĩa
At + giờ + thời gian trong quá khứ	Lúc…giờ…vào… Ví dụ: at 5 o’clock yesterday (vào 5 giờ ngày hôm qua)
At this time + thời gian trong quá khứ	Vào thời điểm này ở… Ví dụ: at this time last year (vào giờ này năm ngoái).
In + năm trong quá khứ	Vào năm…. Ví dụ: In 2002…
In the past

B. Những lưu ý khi làm bài tập thì quá khứ tiếp diễn

Để hoàn thành bài tập thì quá khứ tiếp diễn chính xác và hiệu quả hơn, hãy để tâm đến những lưu ý dưới đây nhé!

1. Tránh nhầm lẫn thì quá khứ tiếp diễn và thì quá khứ đơn

Theo lý thuyết, “thì quá khứ tiếp diễn diễn tả hành động đang xảy ra trong quá khứ thì có hành động khác xen ngang” (câu này hay được dùng với when). Vậy hành động đang xảy ra, ta dùng thì quá khứ tiếp diễn; với hành động xen ngang, ta dùng thì quá khứ đơn. Để hoàn thành được câu chính xác, bạn cần nắm được nghĩa cơ bản của câu.

Ví dụ:

When I came in, she was singing in her bathroom.

→ Cô ấy đang hát thì tôi đến

• Hát là hành động đang xảy ra → dùng thì quá khứ tiếp diễn “was singing”
• Tôi đến là hành động xen ngang → dùng thì quá khứ đơn “I came”

 

2. Đừng quên tobe hoặc thiếu đuôi _ing

Lỗi đơn giản nhưng lại thường gặp nhất ở bài tập về thì tiếp diễn nói chung, thì quá khứ tiếp diễn nói riêng là quên tobe hoặc động từ thiếu đuôi _ing. Nên nhớ, ta cần đảm bảo trong câu tiếp diễn phải có đủ “tobe + V_ing”, nếu không câu của bạn không đúng về ngữ pháp.
